Stop the Risk: Say No to WREC Plans That Threaten Our Water

During the recent meeting, plans for the WREC overlay district were presented to the public for careful consideration and scrutiny. However, what we witnessed during this presentation was not a sign of positive progress or healthy development. Instead, it posed a genuine threat to one of our most valued natural assets. orida’s aquifer. These sacred waterways provide clean drinking water, support diverse ecosystems, and serve as the heart of our local identity.

And now, they could be at risk from runoff filled with diesel, oil, trash, and toxins. Once polluted, this water cannot be restored.

We cannot allow short-sighted planning to endanger the health of our community, our environment, and future generations.

Why This Matters

The development that has been proposed involves the location of retention ponds and emergency staging areas in immediate proximity to sinkholes—sinkholes directly linked to the world-renowned Weeki Wachee Springs and the Spring Hill section of Florida. At this pivotal moment, it is more imperative than ever that your voice be heard and considered—now more so than ever in our community's history.

Take Action Now

This isn’t just about zoning—it’s about doing what’s right.

  • Call and email your Hernando County Commissioners. Tell them this plan is unacceptable and ask for an alternate site.

  • Spread the word. Use your voice on social media, in your neighborhood groups, and in your schools.

  • Attend the upcoming Planning & Zoning meeting. You’ll have 3 minutes to speak. Make them count.

We’ll post the hearing date as soon as it’s confirmed.

This Is Our Fight

We are not powerless. We are residents, parents, nature lovers, and protectors of Spring Hill. We must demand responsible development that protects—not pollutes—our environment.

Weeki Wachee deserves better. Our children deserve better. Spring Hill deserves better.
